New Features!
August 15, 2005 | by Heidi | Filed under
As you may have noticed, the elves have been hard at work on many new 101 site features. I encourage you to click around the site a bit and check out some of the recent improvements:
Discussion Boards: I've added forums, so people can meet, chat, explore, learn, and share as more of a community. They might take some time to ramp up, but I encourage all of you to jump right in and start posting + populating the boards. Register, build out your profiles - you will automatically be listed in the members list.
Journals: I cherry-picked a couple of my favorite writers to kick off a new section of 101 Cookbooks where individuals (other than me) will chronicle their way through different culinary adventures.
- Of course I was slightly horrified (though not entirely surprised) when my old friend Heather told me she wished to bravely embark on a mission that would have her eating her way through an entire pig - part by part. Whole Hog - you can read about it here.
- With a more veg-friendly approach, Lulu LaMer will be exploring recipes, books, and experiences rooted in unrefined, minimally-processed ingredients. Unrefined - you can read it here.
Daily Links: For those of you who need a more frequent fix - a daily collection of interesting stories, tasty recipes and food curiosities from across the web.
Send to a Friend: Know someone who might like to read one of the entries? At the bottom of each recipe/post you will see a send-to-a-friend field.
Darker Fonts: For those of you with monitors that didn't like the lighter grey.
Easy Printing: A link at the base of each post for easy printing of recipes (not on this post, as there is no recipe).
Updated Favorite Cookbooks List: I seem to update this list about once a year. Left hand column.
Huge thanks to Wayne for helping me realize a lot of the features I've had on my wishlist for so long. I'm officially in over my head technically at this point and hugely appreciate his support....and patience :)
The above picture was taken at the third official SF Bay Area Food Blogger get-together, which took place yesterday. Beer, wine, and Blue Bottle coffee was flowing freely. Lots of fun spending face time with so many fantastic people. Big thanks to Biggles for hosting - he had things on the grill that even made the non-vegetarians blush.
Never miss a recipe!

they say the only thing we can rely on is change. but I like that you introduced the changes, they were too daunting to all take in when I was on my own.
it was great to meet you & dish.
looks great, congrats!!!
I hadn't thought it could get any better around here. What a delightful surprise!
I think the minor tweaks make a welcomed addition in an already beautiful website. I come to your site everyday and know I will enjoy your daily links and journals.
Your site has opened my mind and eyes to a whole new world of ingredients, cookbooks, and way of living. I just wanted to make sure you knew how much your website is appreciated. Thank you!
Several people have asked/emailed about the rss feeds. There are now three. I'll explain in the technical forum:

Another "feature" that has been added. If you notice the URL in the above comment, there is some settings that prevent the long URLs from "breaking" the layout (i.e. going outside the gray box and outside the column). The URLs are displayed a bit differently in each browser, but be aware they will still work and can still be copied.
I love it, I love it! Especially the updated cookbooks section - it's always wonderful to read your views on these - particularly when the authors are not always well known in Australia. You have introduced me to some great books - thanks Heidi!
It looks really fantastic! Daily links is such a smart idea. Can't wait to see more!

Heidi,
I find myself spending so much more time at 101 Cookbooks than any of the other food blogs. You've added some really cool features and I can't wait for the Buy + Sell to go live!
Congrats on creating such a fabulous space.
Lulu
I'm so excited to see all the new features you've added. I visit your site quite frequently. The discussion boards are going to be a great addition. I met a lady through your site who ended up sending me Jamaica flowers from Texas so that I could make the tea you featured (BTW it was refreshing). Thanks again for such an outstanding food blog!
Your site looks odd on a MAC - is it optimized for one?
Thanks!
A Mac is just a computer, Maggie; what matters is what web browser you're using.
For what it's worth, the site looks perfect in Safari, the default OS X browser. You might want to try that one.
(One niggle: the "print-friendly" page for entries is blank except for a logo. It's the feature I've been wanting the most, can't wait until it's ready.)
Maggie - I emailed you and linked to the forums, re: refreshing the cache in Firefox.
Brian - one less than satisfactory thing about the redesign is how the print-friendly thing works.
If you look in the archives any entry that has a recipe (they are all displayed in a gray box with an orange title) does in fact have a print-friendly page. Entries like the current one and some of the older ones that have no recipes have a tiny empty grey box and the blank print-friendly page.
I think I have the correct plug-in and whatnot for Movable Type, it's just a matter of getting it to work.
Hi,
I saw this link from My Yahoo content adder and thought about the website as the usual single recipe website, poorly appealing and largely uninformative. But wow, you have really made a wonderful job and i request you to kindly enter into full functionality with respect to the new features, as soon as possible.
Regards,
Hi Heidi,
Do you offer actual receipes on this sight?
If so would you be kind enough to let me
know what to click on.
I'm new @this.
Thanks for your time
