Fall Favorites List Recipe
A list of fall favorites - books, cookbooks, links, gift ideas - all sorts of things.
Wow. Has it been almost a year since my last favorites list? Yikes, I think it has. I'm in the mood to write one. I just finished doing my portion of the prep for dinner tomorrow night, dishes are done, counter tops clean. The house is quiet, and I'm sitting on the couch with my favorite blanket draped over me. So, favorites it is, some of the things that have caught my attention recently. Here goes.
Nikole Herriott and her father Lance carve beautiful objects from 100% salvaged wood and have a shop named Herriott Grace. I love their wispy stemmed spoons, and hand-turned, one-of-a-kind mortar & pestle sets. I had my heart set on one of the sweet little salt bowls, but someone beat me to it (next time!). I encourage you to read about them here, or meet them here. It's such an inspiring story.
The last two books I've read (and really enjoyed!): Kafka on the Shore & Drop City. Now I'm on to A Passage to India and Barbara Kingsolver's new book.
Bryan Nash Gil's relief prints are stunning. I noticed as I was browsing the other day, in addition to the Hemlock 82 print, Bryan has created a new print, Locust. Also very beautiful, yet substantially less expensive.
For Bay Area folks, June Taylor's classes at The Still Room are great - fun, hands-on, and you learn a lot. I just noticed she has her new class schedule posted on her site.
The cookbooks on my nightstand right now: Nigel Slater's Tender, Julie Sanhi's Classic Indian Vegetarian and Grain Cooking, and Canal House Cooking Volume 2. There are just not enough meals in the day....
After falling down the Etsy rabbit hole: I missed out on this cake plate, and this buttercup yellow watering can, but I did bring home a six-legged lamb.
Waiting for the next cold-snap: I bought this bell-shaped wool hat a couple weeks back at Anthropologie, and I smile absolutely every time I see it.
Worth mentioning, I cancelled our cable and bought an Apple TV. Only wish I had done it sooner.
Custom stationery is the best. I love these Postal Press Custom Initial Note Cards. Thank you cards also come in handy after the holidays, and I like these Thank You Cards with the blind impression, really nice.

One of my neighbors brought a completely unfamiliar-to-me style of cornbread to a neighborhood party the other night. It was sort of custard topped, browned a bit, moist as all get out. She told me a friend shared the recipe with her. The trick? Pour a cup of cream over the cornbread batter before baking. She was nice enough to send me the recipe - turns out it was a Marion Cunningham recipe, and I also (finally) made the connection that it was the cornbread recipe Molly reprinted in A Homemade Life. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Oh, and while we are on the topic of people I like name Molly, I was lucky to have dinner at this Molly's house last week. She made this Almond Tart, and now I want to make it too.
Oh boy, this is getting long, and now it is getting late. I'd better wrap it up. One last thing - I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday weekend. I feel thankful everyday that I have a place like this site where I can share ideas, recipes, and general ramblings. Thank you all for inviting so many of the recipes you see on this site into your own homes - you have no idea how great (and appreciative) that makes me feel. Safe travels to all of you not at home this weekend.

i love this website! to me your recipes embody all the best things about cooking real, natural food. while this style of cooking has gained some popularity in recent years, there are still many people who believe that nutritious vegetarian dishes are not only dull, but complicated to make! this is anything but true, and i'm so happy this site exists as testament to that fact! thank you.

Barbara Kingsolver's book is on my list, too. And I want to send it to my best friend in Australia who's fixated on Frida.
Based on your book recommendations, I wanted to make sure you'd read "The God of Small Things"... you'll surely love it if you haven't read it already.

Oh boy, looks like I've found a new study distraction -- Etsy. I bought the cutest rosebud salt and pepper shakers. My grandmother collected them and she would have adored these. Also picked up a handful of vintage butterfly etched drinking glasses. Darling site. Just renewed my repaid Kiva loan last week. I'm so glad you introduced me to that site, Heidi.

Kafka on the Shore and Drop City are two of my all time favorites. You might want to add The Elegance of the Hedgehog to your list too. Also one of my favorites. Thanks for the great site too! I swear I cook something from here at least once a week!

I usually try one of your recipes once a week-ish and they rarely disappoint. I've even gone vegetarian, and you've showed me it's so easy. Looking forward to continuing to follow you.
From a die-hard Murakami fan, I recommend Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Thanks for all the great recipes! They fit well into a law student's budget!
Heidi, I found your blog just over a year ago when I was wondering what to do with a hugh (and somewhat phallic-looking) zucchini I was given. Since finding your "Zucchini Poppy Seed Bread" and being told by my very-vegetarian friend that my zucchini bread was better than any he's every tasted, including his own mother's, I started frequenting your site. I have enjoyed many of your receipts, and have always received the highest complements with all of them I try. In fact, I very rarely go anywhere else for my menu-planning these days. Yesterday, I whipped up your Sweet Potato Spoon Drop bread from your cookbook, Super Natural Cooking. (Oh, did I mention I bought that, too?) and as my dad was complimenting my Thanksgiving dinner, he said, "there's just one thing missing; sweet potatoes." The buzzer on the oven started sounding, and I said back to Dad, "Well, there's your sweet potatoes." He couldn't get over how I made them with goat cheese. (My family has been anti- cows milk for over 3 decades). Hats off to you, Heidi, for turning vegetarian and organic meals chic, fun, and creative. I have been raised this way since the 70s, and it's great to be in the in-crowd, now, instead of the only one on the block who drinks soy milk and eats whole grains. Thank you, thank you. I can't get enough of your site!!!

in the spirit of Thanksgiving, thank you for sharing your recipes with us! We made the Sage, Walnut and Dried Fig Stuffing for Thanksgiving today and it was great. I was so happy to finally have something vegetarian on the table and even the picky eaters liked it :)

I do love hand made wooden spoons. I ran into a shop up in Nova Scotia on a bike ride in the middle of nowhere one day and I've always regretted not picking a couple up. Thanks for all the great info. Cheers.

The shop where you buy paper, envelopes, etc. Is a Stationer (think of those old fashioned signs that said "Printer and Stationer". Anything that is stationAry is stAnding still (standing and stationary both have As).
I also just finished Kafka on the Shore this week. It put me in a very pensative mode, I can't explain, very nice book. Happy Thanksgiving!

There's a great version of that custard-top cornbread recipe in Deborah Madison's "The Savory Way." She says you can either use milk or cream but come on, if you're going for custard who wants plain milk? She attributes the idea to Marion Cunningham but her recipe is great; I recommend it.
Hi Heidi, I have been following this wonderful blog for more than and a year. This is my first posting and I wanted to say thank you for all the great favorites suggestions, ideas, and yummy recipes (especially those built around whole grains, alternative sweeteners and wonderful fresh produce). I live in Berkeley and am thankful every day for the chance to experience all the fabulous local and sustainably grown foods in the Northern California Bay Area. Your favorites lists have been a great source for new places and my family is very happy with all the ones we have gone to thanks to your suggestions! First of all, I love the photo at the top of the craggy trees and birds in flight- it is right up my ally, living in the forest as I do. I am very grateful to have found this blog. I have always enjoyed cooking, but I am making an effort to really learn, and I find this site incredibly helpful, fun and beautiful. So on this day of thanks, I thank you for all you do. Dear Heidi, I found your blog a few months ago and since then i am completely in love with reading it and i ordered your book for my sister for Christmas as i knew she would love your recipes and natural eating style too! They past few months ive cooked from your recommendations and favourites and everything has been amazing! Ive made your lively Lentil soup twice and keep wanting to make more, i add abit of cumin as suggested and lots of greens, it is soo good this time of year! Im also addicted to a lentil daal recipe my friend gave me, so warm and soothing now. I will definitely be making brussel sprouts again at Christmas the only way they should be eaten, as you said, they taste so good! I'm in the midst of reading recipes for Christmas and looking for presents and so your favourites lists have been the best! I love your philosophy of all natural cooking and lifestyle, most of the time i just want to jump into my computer and join you in the kitchen or where ever you are traveling and eating at, it all sounds so great! Thank you and happy holidays, im living in Portugal at the moment but am originally from England so my baking festivities will start there, for now im on the trial and error runs! xx
