Favorites List (8.06.14)

Friends - we finally have shelving in the QUITOKEETO studio. It's a small miracle. There's still a centimeter of dust on the floor, and an 1800s bathroom to deal with - in short, a few more things need addressing if we think we're going to open the doors to anyone aside from our UPS guy. My not-so-secret hope is we'll have some open studio days/evenings/weekends in the near future, where people can stop by, chat, handle knives, and smell perfume - in person. I'll let you know when I have a better sense related to timing. I tend not to post most updates related to QK here, so if you think you'd like to be in the loop related to the shop, the mailing list is here. Not at all related to shelving, I noticed we haven't had a favorites list in quite some time, and thought I'd attempt to remedy that. Enjoy!

- Read this, now reading this.

- Ruth Asawa

- Flowers mean everything to us here.

- To visit

- Extra excited about this book, and this one, and this beauty from Yotam.

- The Aesthetes

- A Type House Divided

- Happiness Inducing Paint Colors

- Day-lilies & drug smuggling

- Riding rails: India

And a couple extra snapshots from the studio - boxes packed and flower-taped(!) for their journey to new homes. And the second, Sarah Kersten's beautiful hand-thrown bowls patiently waiting to be boxed & shipped.

Have a great week, and enjoy the links when you have some spare minutes. Some good reads in there. xo -h

When I saw the article in the Times about the Aesthetes, I was bowled over by the rich, saturated colors. Can't imagine what it would be like to be surrounded by it 24/7. When I read the Type House story, it made me a little sad. Still, I was happy to know more about those ubiquitous fonts.

Heidi, I'd love to know the provenance of those shelves. Intrigued by the handles and the wood shelf pieces. And the bowls are truly gorgeous. Would love to stop by next time we are in the bay area. Thanks!

I've preordered Plenty More from my local bookstore. It won't give me the discount that Amazon does, but I'm supporting a community resource. This is more important to me that a few dollars.

You find the most unique and inspired books to read, Heidi. I always love hearing about the latest!

Love how light and airy your space looks! And I had to laugh at your India rail travel link--I spent waaaaay too much time on that site last year when I needed to book train tickets as part of an Indian trip (my verdict: It was indeed a hassle but well worth it in the end--the train travel was one of the most pleasurable parts of the trip!)

So very looking forward to popping in! I've been eying some perfumes since the beginning, but have, indeed wanted to smell first. And always nice for an physical address to go along with one of my favorite spaces. Hope to see you soon soon. Ever think of a potluck opening? Just throwing my two bits in. :) Then I could bring cake!

Congratulations on your space! It looks absolutely beautiful. And those bowls...*swoon*!

are you planning a trip to India? if you are, we should talk. my work takes me there several times a year. i happened to be there when Interpreter of Maladies won the Pulitzer Prize and the country went CRAZY! it's an excellent book! i saw her earlier this year do a reading from her latest novel. she was also interviewed, but the lady interviewing her was horrible and you could see smoke coming out of Jumpha's ears by the end of it! lol!

Some wonderful links here Heidi, especially the lik to the Aesthetes of Tunisia. What a fabulous name, Gipi de Richemont Salvy. And a reminder with the lovely sunny paint colours that, for us in Australia, summer is one the way.

In a world so totally made trivial by the commonplace and mundane your "favorites" were a rare and serendipitous indulgence. The Ferres-Jones/Hoefler piece was like a good John McPhee New Yorker essay and Asawa as well as the Tangier gang only reaffirm your excellent eye. Thank you.

Heidi,
Can you tell us about the shelves? So beautiful! They look quasi-custom/handmade. Congrats on the new space!

Yes, please share where those shelves came from. I love them!

HS: Hi Beverly, I'll do a proper studio "tour" at some point v. soon and talk through where I sourced some of the fixtures and whatnot - it's pretty much a mix of custom, vintage, and new/catalog.

If you're on an India literary kick, I highly suggest Katherine Boo's "Behind the Beautiful Forevers". It's non-fiction but somehow reads like fiction, which makes it all the more captivating.
