Favorites List (December 2011)

Favorites List (December 2011)

I like December more than most months. I like the tinsel, the twinkling lights, hot mugs of tea in the afternoons, and sparkling drinks later on. I like winter flowers, soft sweaters, shortbread (baked a few minutes too long, please), and a dash of Christmas Elvis. I start looking forward to the parade of citrus that isn't far off, and I daydream about places where snowflakes are native. The last few years I tend to get wintertime allergies, effectively balancing out a favorite month with one of my least favorite things :/ Anyhow, I thought I'd post this list on the early side this month, and then follow it up with a few favorite holiday recipes in the coming days. Hope you like:

- Paint pail mittens.

- Meg Ray | Miette

- Picasso | Life

- Rosemary Gin Fizzes

- Tis the season for thank-yous & handwritten letters.

- A year of beans.

- Erica Tanov fabric + magic.

- DIY gift tags

- Soba noodles this way.

- Travel zipper bags:

- The week she turned six.

- Take a class for fun. For ex: SFAI / Center for the Book / Little Flower School / June Taylor / Love Apple Farms / M+T

- This profile on David Kinch.

- Everyone needs a good pair.

- And a gold heart.

- Keep cozy.

- Chunky hand knits.

- Best-of: cookbooks / photo sites

-This salad.

- Canal House + Food52

- Pumpkin & Goat Cheese Hand-pies

- Watercolor Calendar

- And a great desk series (via Amanda H)

One last thing! I nearly forgot to thank all of you who came out to visit (& have books signed) at the Remodelista Holiday Market. It was wonderful to meet so many of you in person and to have your support. -h

Lead photo: There are three tiny trees, side-by-side, on my block exploding in wintertime flowers. I've been out everyday this week to take pictures of them.

An inspiring list as always. December always seems to be a month I overlook when thinking of favorite times of the year, but by the time it comes I'm craving the coziness it brings! Happy Holidays to you, Heidi.

I am dying to get the year of beans for Christmas. I might buy it for myself if I don't. I emailed them to make sure it would be available after Christmas in case I want to order it. (They said until Jan 6th.)

I love your favorites list, but I always miss the recipe. Thanks for including some recipes as favorites! I'm going to try the brussels sprouts and the soba noodles :)

It's hard for me to read lists like this without hearing Julie Andrews singing in the background. :) I love your lists as they lead me to interesting places.

If I were to post a favourites list, your blog would be on mine. :)

Happy holidays! I'm having winter allergies too- what is up?! There are so many good things on your list. I cherish all my volumes of Canal House Cooking and it's a great deal over at Food52. I'm trying to slow down and savor December for all the magic and holiday fun in the kitchen. It's been snowy and very cold here in Colorado-perfect for the holiday spirit!

I love the sprouted kitchen! I saw their soba noodle post and shared it with a few of my close foodie friends... I think I got them hooked!

I love your monthly faves and hits!

Also fun to go on a little clickfest that's going to start right now...

love the camellias... I don't have any right now so I forget that their time starts now... a bonus for being somewhere where snowflakes are not native.

Only a foodie would be drooling and wishing for the year of beans!! I just knew your cookbook had to be on that best list. You probably do not even realize how many people you inspire--THANK YOU for always being willing to share your ideas and for the teaching techniques.

December is one of my favorite months too! It's just so warm and cozy - makes you want to curl up with a blanket, a good book and a glass of wine. Those hand pies look delicious! Can't wait to try them.

Ohh! The year of beans sounds fun. Too bad they only deliver to the US. Would be fun to discover some new beans. Not to mention they're so good for you.

I love chunky knits. I hope to learn more than just knitting rectangle items (eg: scarves) and knit more fun stuff like mittens/ toques... one day.

Heidi, I saw your book for sale in a garden shop in Brooklyn the other day --- so great! Congratulations! just wanted to say that I think you provide a great service. Every time I need to find a quick, easy, delicious meal based on the random ingredients I have at home and something special from the greenmarket, I go straight to 101cookbooks.

I am a huge fan of your "favorites" posts. My only suggestion is that you "target" the links open to a new page so that I don't have to constantly backtrack to return to your page.

Is that tree a Stewartia, I wonder. What is the temperature where you live? I just bought (I'm in Northern Massachusetts) one and hope its blooms will look like these next summer.

great list. To celebrate my birthday I am taking my 6 year old granddaughter and her friend to the "Nutcracker and the Mouse King" ballet this Sunday afternoon, with a tea party at Grandma's house first. The disposable camera idea is perfect for them to record the day. Thank you.

How to know an item was a hit: My eyes flew towards the screen cartoon-style on the words "Rosemary Gin Fizzes", my fingers with a mind of their own clicked the link and continued to stare and wonder how long the rosemary has been in my fridge and is it still viable, because baby, I need that rosemary gin fizz! Thanks for the list :)

Heidi, thank you so much for your wonderful recipes!! I'm in grad school right now studying for finals, and tonight I took a break and made your wonderful tempeh curry. It has become one of my absolute favorite meals!! I find myself turning to it again and again when I need a little comfort food, but also something clean and healthy. Tonight it was perfect and gave me the kick I needed to get back to the books. Again, thank you. I get inspired reading your blog!!

HS Thanks for the nice note Kelly! Glad I could help.

I was very excited to see travel zipper bags - these might be perfect for my mother who is impossible to buy for..... but the link was a malicious site and would not go through for me.
Any chance you can list what the brand is?
Thanks!

Dear Heidi,

You mentioned all the things you like about December, but not one time did you mention Jesus! I like Jesus, not only in December but every month of the year!
