The Soup Peddler's Slow & Difficult Soups

Postby Heidi on Mon Aug 08, 2005 3:12 pm

I got a copy of the Soup Peddler's Soup & Difficult Soups cookbook the other day.

Essentially, it is the story of a young guy who lives in Austin, Texas - he delivers soup each week from the back of his beloved (but beat-up) yellow bicycle to a flock of dedicated subscribers. I'm wondering if any of you are on his delivery circuit?

I love this story. I love that he is making a living doing this - and even better, that his community is supporting him. Bravo soupman, bravo Austin. Can't wait to try some of his recipes.

The Soup Peddler has expanded his delivery operations, adding other delivery people and expanding his area. A friend and I subscribed last year (he only delivers during the fall, winter and spring) with mixed results. Some soups were delicious -- the shrimp bisque, for example. Others were so-so. But all were interesting. And I applaud him for developing such a unique and successful business. :-)

Judy,

I'm about 1/2 way through the book right now and have my eye on the Armenian Apricot Soup - unless of course, I get distracted by tales of more seductive bisques, borschts, or bouillabaisse.

I do wish there was a soup man in my neighborhood -def. better than a pool man.

Darn you Heidi,
As if my amazon cookbook habit weren't bad enough...you inspire me to buy more. I just ordered "Soup Peddler", and I am not even that fond of soup; but it looks like a charming read.
Your web site is beautiful and brilliantly presented....and nothing makes me happier than a new cookbook...v

Me too Vici....I'm going to make one of the soups tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. This might be a good cookbook club selection for later in the Fall, as more people purchase it.

While the book looks interesting enough overall, I just couldnt shell out for another soup book yet. (I have The Daily Soup Cookbook, The Pasta and Co Cookbook, The Moosewood Daily Special , and S.O.U.P.S.
But I was able to convince the Seattle Public Library to add a copy to their collection for me to check out. Isn't that nice of them?

I'll be interested to do some cooking along once the book gets here.

And I'm not sure which soup I want to try. The gumbo sounded interesting until I read the description notes where he described it as mud...

My husband just bought me this book as a gift - the fish chowder looks great and I am anxious to start it! The chicken soup left something to be desired, but I love that by in large these are different soups and are conversation starters by themsleves!

the apricot soup.

I really didn't like the apricot soup; however, I used very tart, strongly flavored apricots that rather overpowered the other flavors. I also found that it tasted much better after it'd been in the fridge for a day or two.
