Food Blog Roundup
November 16, 2006 | by Heidi | Filed under
I just crawled off a the last leg of a 26 hour series of flights that started yesterday morning in southern Italy. I need some time to get unpacked and settled in so I thought I would post a quick list of the last five food blogs I've added to my reading list. I'll also throw in a few snapshots I took at the Worlds of Flavor Conference held at the CIA at Greystone earlier this month for some eye candy.
Rancho Gordo
http://ranchogordo.typepad.com/
My favorite beans. Now I'm able to see how Steve is using them in his own New World kitchen. In the last few posts he talks about Tarahumara Tekomari runner beans, tomatillo salsa, Padron peppers, and tiny tacos with orca beans.

Harris Salat
http://www.harrissalat.com/
I got to hang with Harris in Puglia, Italy all last week. He's as cool as they come. He writes about stuff like kung fu style tea and Japanese pottery. Recent posts on his site explore Darjeeling tea, Beijing's best restaurants, and pairing sake with cheese.
Harold McGee
http://curiouscook.blogspot.com/
For those of you who don't already know, Harold operates at the intersection of food and science. He's considered the go-to guy for information on the white hot realm of food chemistry and molecular gastronomy. Recent posts on his site focus on the the complex aromas of black tea, omega-3 fatty acid levels in grass fed beef, toxicity of green potatoes, and the impact temperature has on lycopene levels in red watermelons.

Michael Ruhlman
http://blog.ruhlman.com/
One of the things that makes this site a fun read is his ability to drag some of the big guns of the culinary world down into his digital sandbox. He was in a pig rut for the past week or so, but broke the trend with a post that talks about the factors contributing to increased demand for access to locally grown food.
Lime.com
http://www.lime.com/
Lots of regularly updated, not-overly-crunchy natural foods content. The design of their front pages is confusing and overwhelming, but I like some of their content so I navigate their site strictly though the RSS feed in my news reader.

great selection of food blogs. thanks!!!
I love Harold McGee's blog - I just wish it were open for comments. Perhaps he's just afraid of a deluge. I've started reading Ruhlman's too. Just love it when Anthony Bordain hops in for a wise-ass comment.
Thank you very much for giving link to Harold McGee's blog.
Great roundup! I really enjoy getting tip-offs to new blogs.
Fabulous photos...thanks for sharing.
Howdy, Thanks for the tip about McGee's blog, it's now on my favorites list. Hope you get over your jet lag quickly.
Heidi, Thanks for the great blogs. Do you have any links that celebrate live food? food like at Cafe Gratitude.
I've been reading your fantastic recipes for awhile, but never commented. I've just recently found a passion for blog-design. From a web design standpoint, I notice one teeny thing that makes your blog stand out, and it's that you only have one entry per page. I love it! My web designer side of me wants to know, did you build your site yourself, or are you hosted through a blog-hosting site?
Lime.com! I work in the same office building as them in NYC and their floor is by far the most distinctive (and green!) Always thought they were more of an exercise/yoga site though. Thanks for renewing my interest in it.
So glad you are back, as a selfish reader I have missed you and your words! Thanks for all the new blog ideas, i.e. ways for me to laze away the day, I just spent about an hour perusing Ruhlman's blog and I am supposed to be working on my thesis, argh!!
Get some rest!
thanks for the kind mention, heidi! and i'm delighted you mentioned rancho gordo too! he's got the goods, more people need to know about his dried corn.
I love these photos, especially the one of the dancer. And the blogs are cool! One blog that I've recently fallen in love with (although it's pretty new) is Baking and Books. Have you heard of it? It's written by a NYC graduate student and has a lot of yummy recipes. I always get hungry looking through that site.
Heidi, thanks for the link to Harris Salat. I fell in and haven't stopped reading for an hour. What a WONDERFUL food blog. He's so well-traveled and the research is so interesting. Grazie!
What about Todd Allen's blog, Westchester Eats? I guess it's more of a local thing, but I'm hooked.

There are some great recipes and tips. The quick bread tips are extremely helpful and the pumpkin bread recipe turned out great.
Heidi, thanks for pointing the way to these great blogs. I have a feeling they will become new favorites.
Michael, I blew it. I should have said hi when I saw you at WoF last week.
Lou, you should check out the guys at We Like it Raw for live food content. http://www.welikeitraw.com/
Kelci, thanks. The site is built on MT and uses a custom template.
Harold McGee is the man - his science is genuinely applicable in the kitchen. We love your blog, too!
I just ran across a Fab food blog recently- marysbartlett.wordpress.com
It's both unique in approach, and wide in scope.
